1. Where do I have to apply for the Studienkolleg München?
You have to apply at a Bavarian university for a university place for your desired field of study. You will receive an invitation for the entry test at the Studienkolleg from this university. You cannot apply directly to the Studienkolleg.

2. Where do I have to send my application to?
Send your application to the Bavarian university where you want to study.

3. Which application documents do I have to send?
Please see the website of the university of your choice for details. Usually you need a notarized copy of your original diploma qualifying for university admission and an original translation of this document. Besides you need the application of admission (download from website of university) and a CV.

4. Which diplomas do I need to prove knowledge of German?
At the Studienkolleg you will have to prove your language abilities during the German entry test. Some universities, though, require a certification at the level of "Mittelstufe II" before the will refer you to the Studienkolleg.

5. How do I know whether I have to go through Studienkolleg to attend university?
The university where you have applied will tell you whether you are allowed to proceed directly to university or whether you will have to attend Studienkolleg first.

6. Can I attend the Studienkolleg voluntarily as a preparation for my studies?
No, unfortunately this is not possible.

7. Do I have to take part in the German entry test of the Studienkolleg by all means?
Only if you have obtained a "Deutsches Sprachdiplom der KMK, Stufe II", achieved after 2008, and inform the Studienkolleg about this before the entry exam, you do not have to take part in the German entry test. If you have already passed the entry test at an earlier point in time you have to inform the Studienkolleg before the current entry exam.

8. Can I attend the Studienkolleg as a German?
Yes. German citizens who have obtained their diploma qualifying for university admission abroad can attend also the Studienkolleg if the Bavarian university does not grant direct admission, but tells you to attend the Studienkolleg. The evaluation of foreign diplomas qualifying for university admission follows the criteria which are published by the "Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen im Sekretariat der Kultusminsterkonferenz" in Bonn. (go to www.anabin.de).

9. Can I take part in the final exam ("Feststellungsprüfung") without having visited the Studienkolleg?
You can take part in the Feststellungsprüfung as an external applicant (so-called "Externer Studierender" or "Externer Kandidat") in the course that matches your future field of studies. You also have to apply at a Bavarian university for this (go to "External candidates").

10. How can I practrice for the German entry exam?
German courses for the preparation of the entry exam at the Studienkolleg München are offered by many private or public institutions like the VHS ("Volkshochschule") in Munich. There are no such courses at the Studienkolleg. Before signing up for a preparatory German class at a private institute you should get exact inform about the focus and contents of the class! Besides, it is advisable to check the "value-for-money" aspect beforehand. Perhaps you can get in touch with former students that can evaluate the quality of the class.

11. Which language abilities are necessary for the German entry exam?
The most important aspect for the entry test as well as for the classes is a quick and profound comprehension of longer reading texts. Basically you should be able to understand all German texts of this website.
In addition to that you should be able to use grammar and vocabulary according to level B1+ to B2 fluently, so that you can communicate easily and write coherent texts on various topics. You will not be allowed to use any dictionaries during the entry test.
There is a sample of the entry exam to be downloaded which helps you to assess the level of the tasks and texts ( "Downloads"; exam time: 90 min.). Tasks may vary each semester (e.g. grammatical structures in texts instead of single sentences, questions on a picture instead of questions on a table)

12. G-Course or M-Course for future students of psychology?
If you apply for the subject psychology, you can either join the G-Course or the M-Course at the Studienkolleg. However, the LMU München and some other Bavarian universities only offer a psychology degree "Bachelor of Science". This means that you need sufficient knowledge in natural sciences and mathematics, which you can only acquire in the M-Course. You also need a good command of English (above all in reading comprehension). But at the moment English classes can only be offered in our G-Courses and W-Courses. You should be clear about one more fact: In all of Germany, psychology is a subject with special restricted admission (Numerus Clausus); therefore, only a limited amount of places is available at each university. If you do not achieve the necessary grade point average, you will have to choose a different subject covered by your course (G-Course or M-Course). Consequently, it makes sense to think about alternatives in advance. This can also influence your choice, whether to join the G-Course or the M-Course.

13. Can I pass the first semester at any Studienkolleg and then attend the Studienkolleg Munich for the second semester?
Usually it is not possible to change from one Studienkolleg to another. Exceptions are subject to the decision of the Studienkolleg and the university of your choice.

14. How much does the Studienkolleg cost?
The Studienkolleg does not charge any fees. Books and study materials may add up to 50€ per semester. Registration fees at the university ("Studentenwerksbeitrag") are 42€ at the moment (Nov. 2010; see also "Costs & Financing").
